DYI magnet board

Everyone knows I love pictures and have about 10,000 in my house but I had to make some changes.  My refrigerator was literally covered in magnetic frames and about 100 of P's little play magnets.  I took all the frames off the front of the fridge and moved a few of my favorites that I just could not take down to the side.  I made a framed menu/schedule magnetic board inspired by my friend Chelsea who made this one.  But then I decided it still looked messy with all of P's magnets everywhere.  So, I came up with a solution.
Her very own (and super cute) magnet board for her playroom wall.

Now, I am not very good with building things with wood but I will tell you what I am good at.  Bossing the hubby around.  ;) So we were off to buy supplies....

What you will need
1 sheet of galvanized sheet metal (we found ours in the plumbing section they come in a lot of different sizes)
Wall trim
Paint
Fabric of your choice
Duct tape (because I'm lazy)
Nails/wood glue
Sawtooth hanger
Foam board or a thing piece of wood/cork board to back the metal

How to
First we hade to make the frame.  Dustin measured it out and cut the pieces of trim to fit around the metal.  He used nails and gorilla wood glue to hold it together.  After that was done we painted it white.  You could paint it any color you wanted to make it more fun!  I am boring.

We covered the metal with the fabric and made sure it was pulled tightly.  Then we duct taped it on the back.  It won't be seen so it doesn't matter.  Easy way out.

Our trim had a little rivet in it so the sheet metal set nicely right inside.  You can again use the wood glue or small nails to get the sheet metal attached to the trim.

We decided to add something to support the sheet metal since it can be a little floppy.  I ran across some self adhesive foam board at hobby lobby and we decided to try that.  We were going to use a piece of plywood or cork board but decided against it since the foam board was A) cheap and B) lightweight. After all, this would be hanging on the wall.  I took the self adhesive sticky backing off and stuck it to the metal.  Easy peasy people!

We added two sawtooth hangers on top.
These guys in case you didn't know.  I had no idea what they were called.

And viola!  Done.

Don't forget tomorrow is the last day to enter the twotara giveaway.

Great idea! How do things stick with the fabric over the sheet metal? Just wondering if it interferes with the magnet.

Great idea! How does the magnets stay on the fabric? do they stick well? And what type of fabric did you use?

I love this! Once we got a stainless fridge, I had to move our kids' magnet toys to the laundry room and use the washing machine. Then we got a stainless front loader, so I packed the toys away. They had outgrown them anyway, but now that little sister is two, she's ready for the toys but had no place for them. I am going to follow your tutorial and make this for her!
